Hi,
Twenty Minute Topic 31: Resolving Homelessness with Cost Effective Dignity …

In this series journalist Marcus Stead and veteran campaigner and blogger, Greg Lance-Watkins discuss big issues affecting all our lives over a twenty-minute period.
In this 30th. episode:
Twenty Minute Topic – Topic 31 …
This week, Marcus Stead and Greg Lance-Watkins discuss & assess:
IN THIS week’s edition, Marcus Stead talks to Greg Lance-Watkins about an idea Greg has for tackling homelessness.
Greg’s idea is a remarkably simple, yet effective way of bringing dignity and safety to the homeless.
Marcus asks Greg a series of questions about potential problems and pitfalls, all of which Greg addresses convincingly.
Whichever way you put it this is a cost-effective solution offering the homeless security, dignity, an address & genuine support. The facilities such as communal space, possible benefits & councilling space, a medical facility, showers, laundry even perhaps some form of subsidised canteen can all be added as appropriate. Empty council owned warehouse facilities could contain 10 or 20 or even 100 8′ x 10′ containers or larger – each with its own padlocked door – however you look at it this is a massive improvement on living rough on the street, it provides dry shelter & basic facilities.
Not only is it a huge improvement for the homeless it is a solution society that they can not afford not to provide.
There doesn’t appear to be any obvious downside to Greg’s proposals, so why won’t local councils go ahead and implement it?
I don’t claim this is a perfect solution, but it can be up and running in any city within 3 months and will create huge savings in policing, crime and improvement for other city dwellers and users.
As this is rolled out across Britain we can provide support for all levels of homeless, the inadequate, ex military veterans with mental problems and somany more – it is a stepping stone for those whose life has fallen apart, for kids who want a start in life and so much more.
To show just how easy this solution would be for any Council or organisation – I have just looked up a supplier of containers local to me on the internet and spoken to their MD Steve Reece, I’m sure he could help get this idea off the ground and the vulnerable out of shop doorways, cardboard boxes and dilapidated tent structures and back to an acceptable standard of security and hope, dignity and self-respect:
Marcus Stead and Greg Lance-Watkins address some tough, often controversial, issues, and welcome you to their growing worldwide audience.
If you have a topic you believe would be of interest to our growing worldwide audience, we would welcome your suggestions.
Thank you for listening and particularly for any helpful feedback you can give to improve our service.
