Hi,

as I am actively opposing the industrialisation of the Severn Estuary CLICK HERE * with the unsustainable and underhand imposition of a series of giant wind turbines in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that will not only fail to produce the power output claimed for the period claimed, based on recognised data but together with harming wildlife in this instance is likely to make the most dangerouys road in EUrope even more dangerous with yet more fatalities – I found these two postings below of particular interest:

Global Wind Day Power Failure

Yesterday was Global Wind Day, a worldwide event organised by the European Wind Energy Association and the Global Wind Energy Council to help the public discover “wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems, decarbonise our economies and boost jobs and growth“.

To celebrate, Gaia has collated the UK Wind energy output for yesterday and plotted it against the total potential wind capacity:

Good job we still have coal and gas to pick up the slack…

It is worth noting from Andrew Watt’s site ‘Watts Up With That’ that yet another scientific analysis and report has produced clear evidence, yet again, that Global Warming & Climate Change are clearly NOT a man made phenomenon!

Medieval Warm Period confirmed via cave study of 3000 years of climatic variations

Remote cave study reveals 3000 years of European climate variation

From the University of New South Wales:

SYDNEY — University of New South Wales Australia-led research on limestone formations in a remote Scottish cave has produced a unique 3000-year-long record of climatic variations that may have influenced historical events including the fall of the Roman Empire and the Viking Age of expansion.

The study of five stalagmites in Roaring Cave north of Ullapool in north-west Scotland is the first to use a compilation of cave measurements to track changes in a climate phenomenon called the North Atlantic Oscillation.

‘Our results also provide the longest annual record of this important phenomenon, which has a big impact on the climate in Europe,’ says study leader, UNSW Professor Andy Baker.

‘It confirms that the during the Medieval Warm Period between 1080 and 1430 the oscillation index was in an unusually prolonged positive phase, which brings increased rain to Scotland and drier conditions in the western Mediterranean,’ says Baker, of the UNSW Connected Waters Initiative Research Centre.

‘Our results also reveal there was another persistent positive phase between 290 and 550, which coincides with the decline of Rome and a period of intensified human migration in southern Europe during the Dark Ages.

‘This was followed by a persistent negative phase between 600 and 900 which may have provided warm and dry conditions in northwestern Europe that made it suitable for westward expansion by the Vikings, although the precise timing of this event is contested.’

The study is published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The North Atlantic Oscillation climate index measures the air pressure difference between Iceland and the Azores islands off the Portuguese coast, and is a record of the strength of the westerly winds in the North Atlantic.

Roaring Cave, or Uamh an Tartair, in northwest Scotland, is a shallow cave beneath a blanket of peat that has accumulated during the past 4000 years.

Rainfall levels in this region closely correspond with the strength of the oscillation index in winter, with higher precipitation when it is positive. And the upward rate of growth of stalagmites in the cave is very sensitive to rainfall — the more water in the peat, the more slowly the stalagmites grow.

‘We painstakingly measured the thickness of each annual growth ring in five stalagmites taken from the cave, including one that provides a continuous annual record spanning more than 1800 years,’ says Baker.

By overlapping the five stalagmites they obtained a proxy record of the climate at the cave during a 3000-year period from about 1000 BC to 2000 AD.

‘Our research provides a climate context for some of the big human migration events in Europe and allows us to start building hypotheses about the impact of environment on societal change,’ says Baker.

The team includes researcher from UNSW, the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and the University of Arizona in the U.S.

The paper: http://www.nature.com/srep/2015/150611/srep10307/full/srep10307.html

Abstract:

Annually laminated stalagmites can be used to construct a precise chronology, and variations in laminae thickness provide an annual growth-rate record that can be used as a proxy for past climate and environmental change. Here, we present and analyse the first composite speleothem annual growth-rate record based on five stalagmites from the same cave system in northwest Scotland, where precipitation is sensitive to North Atlantic climate variability and the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Our 3000-year record confirms persistently low growth-rates, reflective of positive NAO states, during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA). Another persistently low growth period occurring at 290-550 CE coincides with the European Migration Period, and a subsequent period of sustained fast growth-rate (negative NAO) from 600-900 AD provides the climate context for the Viking Age in northern and western Europe.

#G0589* – Chris HUHNE Emerges From His Nuclear  Shelter!

Hi,

Many will remember the quote of this EU lackey Chris Huhne in the article when he said of Nuclear Power::
In 2007 he described it as a ‘tried, tested and failed technology’ and said it had no future.
Or was his thinking so backward and doctrinal that he meant :

Indeed the Romans used oil as a power source.
Has this idiot not heard of progress, research & development?
People like The Greens, Lib.Dims., CND, Green Peace, friends of the Earth and fellow travellers with their dishonest Aesopian names designed deliberately to mislead have much to answer for.
Had these self serving ludites not been so willing to lie for their personal gain and self enrichment it is probable that the catastropies of Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and yes even Fukishima may never of  happened.
R&D and thus progress has been severely hampered by these slavering morons chaining themselves to rail;ings, bullying weak kneed politicians unfit and incapable of leading and duping children and the gullible.
There is every reason to believe without these malicious fools we would by now have even possibly progressed to fusion and domestic use of nuclear power on a clean, safe local basis – even perhaps fusion fueled transport. Had the years since about 1960 not been so damaged by the ludites – like Chris Huhne and their ignorant ilk.
Perhaps if they were all given speeding tickets they could all be forced to adopt rational thought!
We may even, then be able to ditch the costly and environmentally damaging idiocy of building windmills as votive tokens of the new religion for to be sure they are about as much use as a soup sandwich at generating reliable or cost effective electricity!
UK needs new nuclear plants says Huhne as he completes U-turn on power stations

Power struggle: Energy Secretary Chris Huhne's latest call contradicts previous statements he has made on nuclear power
Power struggle: Energy Secretary Chris Huhne’s latest call contradicts previous statements he has made on nuclear power
Energy Secretary Chris Huhne completed his spectacular U-turn yesterday when he backed a new generation of nuclear power stations.
The Liberal Democrat minister said new nuclear plants were needed to keep Britain’s lights on and would have an essential role in tackling climate change and curbing soaring fuel bills.
Mr Huhne, who once described nuclear power as a ‘failed technology’, now says it is an essential part of getting Britain ‘off the oil hook’.
Speaking ahead of the launch of new electricity market reforms which will make nuclear power more attractive for business investors, he praised the example of France, where 77 per cent of electricity is generated by nuclear power stations, arguing that it provides the French with both better energy security and lower bills.
And, putting himself on a potential collision course with the rest of his party, he warned that Britain is in danger of falling behind if it delays the dash for new nuclear power stations.
Mr Huhne said: ‘Some countries already have a head start.
‘Electricity prices in France are set to rise by around three per cent this year; compare and contrast with Britain, where prices are rising by three times as much.
‘It is no surprise that less than ten per cent of France’s electricity comes from fossil fuels.’
Mr Huhne’s new enthusiasm for nuclear power leaves him open to charges of hypocrisy.
Back to the future: Mr Huhne believes nuclear plants like Sellafield are essential to reduce the UK’s dependence on oil
Back to the future: Mr Huhne believes nuclear plants like Sellafield are essential to reduce the UK‘s dependence on oil
In 2007 he described it as a ‘tried, tested and failed technology’ and said it had no future.
He has since claimed that these comments were ‘misunderstood’ and that he was not opposed to nuclear power provided it did not involve large state subsidies.
The Lib Dem manifesto pledged to ‘reject’ plans for new nuclear plants.
Mr Huhne’s comments will infuriate MPs in his party who want the Coalition to follow the lead of Germany and Italy and scrap nuclear in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan.
The Coalition Agreement allows Lib Dem MPs to abstain on the issue but many are now expected to vote against.
A spectacular conversion
Some 19 Lib Dem MPs – one third of the Parliamentary party – have signed a Commons motion warning that events in Fukushima ‘underline the extreme dangers inherent in nuclear power’, and calling for it to be abandoned.
Signatories include former leader Charles Kennedy and party president Tim Farron.
Lib Dem MP Martin Horwood accused ministers of pushing through secret subsidies for the nuclear industry – in breach of the Coalition agreement.
He called for a windfall tax on the nuclear industry to claw the money back. Mr Horwood said: ‘There are going to be some pretty frank discussions about nuclear.
Disaster: Mr Huhne's comments are certain to anger Lib Dem MPs who have called for nuclear power to be scrapped in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan earlier this year
Disaster: Mr Huhne’s comments are certain to anger Lib Dem MPs who have called for nuclear power to be scrapped in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan earlier this year
‘There is growing unhappiness at the level of subsidies creeping in for the nuclear industry – they are being given millions of pounds for no change in behaviour whatsoever.’
Mr Huhne has been accused of brushing aside safety concerns in the wake of Japan’s Fukushima disaster by insisting that a new generation of eight nuclear plants must go ahead.
*The amount collected by the Government under the banner of ‘green taxes’ has topped £40billion for the first time.
It means that environment taxes levied in the name of tackling climate change have doubled in just 16 years and now generate enough for the Treasury to cover the entire military defence budget.

#G345* – BLOW YOUR MIND at THE WORLDS BIGGEST SCAM – WIND POWER!

#G345* – BLOW YOUR MIND at THE WORLDS BIGGEST SCAM – WIND POWER!

 357 Tons & 115m High!!
 LIMITATIONS?
Hi,
Quite Ridiculous!
100 of these ridiculous windmills @ just under £1Bn. To provide power for upto 200,000 homes but the windmills apparently only function fully for about 1/3 of the time due to too much or too little wind.
I note the MD of the company stated it cost his company £900M to build this but would not state what you and I paid in grants and was that part of the £900M or on top of?
He also said he expected his pay back period to be 7 or 8 years what is OUR payback?
I doubt it is by any way a paying proposition without grants and 10 or 15 years from now when the grants run out and the scam is over who, or the tax payer, will pay to dismantle this obscene eye sore?
The article below quotes windpower can deliver 3GW yet an article yesterday said 1,453MW as I recall and is this based on max output or the 1/3rd. they actually deliver – it all looks like a massive fudge!
NO ONE ever discusses the damage nor the environmental damage, nor the cost of removal, nor the infrastructure required for maintenance.
Drax with a 10GW output supplies power for 6,000,000 homes day in day out and a new generation Nuclear would probably supply 20GW or 12,000,000 homes relentlessly for half a century.

March of the wind farm: World’s biggest offshore turbine site to be switched on today off the Kent coast

By David Derbyshire
Last updated at 7:26 AM on 23rd September 2010
·         Add to My Stories
Arranged in formation like an advancing army, this is the world’s biggest offshore wind farm.
The array of more than 100 giant turbines towering over the North Sea will be switched on today off the coast of Kent.
The Thanet farm will be able to generate up to 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power a small city – but only if the wind is strong enough.
Impressive sight: There are more than 100 giant turbines in the Thanet wind farm
It means that Britain is now the biggest offshore wind generator in the world, producing more electricity from sea-based turbines than the rest of the globe put together.
According to the wind industry, the UK’s wind farms now have a capacity of 5 gigawatts (GW) or enough power for nearly three million homes.
The creation of the monster farm is part of the Government’s ‘dash for wind’ – a massive expansion of green energy planned over the next decade which will see around 10,000 new turbines going up at sea and across the country.
The Government claims the wind farms are needed to slash greenhouse gas emissions from coal, oil and gas-fired power stations and meet Europe’s tough climate change targets.
Turbine Graphic
To meet the targets, the UK will have to generate around a third of its electricity from renewables – such as wind, wave and wood-burning – by 2020.
However, critics say the expansion is costly and that the UK will become too dependent on the variable power of the wind.
While the last government enthusiastically embraced wind power, critics say it will fulfil barely a fraction of Britain’s energy needs – and at a huge cost. They also argue that huge wind turbines are a scar on Britain’s landscape, even when sited a few miles out to sea.
Dr Benny Peiser of the sceptical Global Warming Policy Foundation think-tank said: ‘It’s a complete waste of money. It costs three times as much to generate electricity from offshore wind and the cost is passed to taxpayers and in fuel bills.
‘And you need to back up wind farms with fossil fuel power stations when there’s no wind blowing.
‘Economically it doesn’t make sense and the savings in carbon emissions are not as great as their supporters claim.’
But a spokesman for the wind industry association RenewableUK said: ‘Five gigawatts is an important milestone.
‘Renewable energy generally and wind energy in particular is not alternative energy any longer – it is absolutely mainstream.’
The Thanet Offshore Wind Farm lies 7.5miles off Foreness Point, Margate, and will be visible from the coast on a clear day.
Swedish energy giant Vattenfall – which spent £780million on the array – refuses to say how long it will take for the farm to pay for itself.
Each turbine towers nearly 380 feet over the sea and stretches another 82 feet to the sea bed below. Working at full capacity, each can generate 3MW of electricity.
‘Until now we have been in the commissioning period where we have been testing each of the turbines,’ said a company spokesman yesterday.
‘All of them are now able to generate electricity, although they are not up to their full capacity yet.’
However, the farm will only generate its 300MW if the wind is blowing at 16 metres per second. The company estimates that on average, the farm will work at 35 to 40 per cent capacity.
City power: Each turbine towers nearly 380 feet over the sea and stretches another 82 feet to the sea bed below
Windy city: Working at full capacity, each can generate 3MW of electricity
Like all wind farms, the turbines have to be switched off if the wind is too strong.
‘You have to bear in mind that coal and gas-fired power stations don’t work at full capacity either – and even nuclear power stations are taken off line,’ the spokesman added.
According to the wind industry, Britain currently has another 18GW of wind capacity in construction and in the planning system. If that is added, wind farms could make up to a third of the country’s annual energy consumption.
Maria McCaffery of RenewableUK added: ‘Today’s developments are of tremendous significance.
‘In 2002 the UK was generating around 2 per cent of all electricity from renewables. We are now on the threshold of 10 per cent having increased outputs five-fold.’
Almost three quarters of the wind power generated in Britain actually comes from on shore turbines.
But the Government is also placing its faith in offshore farms, to take advantage of the strong winds around the coast.
The sort of high-pressure weather system that brought freezing temperatures to the UK last winter – and dramatically increased demand from the National Grid – is often accompanied by very little wind.

Via the blogs, we learn that feed-in tariffs are a total rip-off. But how can that message possibly prevail when the BBC’s “take” is that buying in to the scam offers “a great return on investment!” And, needless to say, the Beeb is also talking up the news that the world’s biggest offshore wind farm off the Kent coast has been officially opened.

As always, the BBC sprays out figures, but no information. We get told that there are 100 turbines in the £780m wind farm, and that these “are expected to generate enough electricity to power 240,000 homes” – perhaps the most dishonest way going of describing the capacity of these machines.

In fact, getting proper statistics from the media is a losing battle, but Vattenfall, the project owner, has it on its website that there are 100 Vestas V90 wind turbines, with a total capacity of 300 MW. This is sufficient, it says, to supply more than 200,000 homes per year with clean energy.

By the time you take in the load factors (about 26 percent), however, and apply the rather understated government-inspired domestic consumption factor, you actually get 131,000 homes – but even then the figure is fiction. On cold, windless days, the number is zero. On a breezy summer night, when the power isn’t needed anyway and the National Grid is having to pay suppliers not to produce electricity, it could be a lot more. Such are the games they play.

But there are no games when it comes to the subsidies. On top of the £40 million in electricity sales, Vattenfall will collect at least £60 million a year in Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) top-sliced from our electricity bills so that we do not notice the theft. And theft it is, an undisclosed tax paid to these rip-off merchants for producing unsustainable electricity.

Over term for the 20 years these turbines are suppose to last, we are looking at a public subsidy of £1.2 billion – enough to build a 1GW nuclear power station – a plant with a deliverable capacity more than 13 times this wind array. That is the extent of the rip-off to which we are being subjected.

And for that, it appears, we get 21 full-time green jobs. But if we gave them a million each and told them to get lost, that is not even a rounding error on the amount we are dealing with. We would get to “save” (i.e., not spend) £1.2 billion, less £0.021 billion. Instead, we pay – effectively – nearly £60m per job for the 20 years. These must be the most expensive jobs on the planet – we could even have 20 David Camerons for the price of each worker.

As with my previous thread, I ask why we tolerate this. That much, of course, is rhetoric. We tolerate it because, individually, we are powerless against the might of the state. But that will not always be the case. We need to make it so before the state ruins us.
