Referendum calls are absurd, says minister
By Toby Helm and Bruno Waterfield
Join the Telegraph campaign for an EU referendum
Gordon Brown was shaping up for a bitter and prolonged battle over Europe with the Conservatives last night after his Europe minister described calls for a referendum on the new European Union treaty as “frankly absurd”.
The comments by Jim Murphy, during a debate in the House of Commons, came ahead of a speech today by William Hague, the shadow foreign secretary, in which he will say a national vote is essential because the treaty would transfer powers from Westminster to Brussels “in spades”.
Mr Murphy also appeared to rule out any attempt to renegotiate the wording of the draft EU Treaty.
The Tories and some Labour MPs want ministers to change aspects of the draft treaty, including a section which they say would make national parliaments subservient to Brussels.
But Mr Murphy told MPs he had no intention of seeking any amendments. Responding to the eurosceptic Tory MP Bill Cash, who said there must be a referendum on a document that would create an EU president and foreign minister, Mr Murphy quoted the Europhile former Tory Chancellor, Kenneth Clarke, as saying to ask the people to vote on such a document would be “frankly absurd”.
Mr Murphy said he could not think of a better way to answer Mr Cash than to repeat Mr Clarke’s assessment.
In a sign that the Tories – who have been reluctant to reignite arguments over the EU since David Cameron became leader – are now willing to put the issue at centre stage again, Mr Hague will tell the Policy Exchange think-tank that the treaty will “fundamentally change the European Union and Britain’s place in it”.
He will argue that it is the same in all but name as the Constitutional Treaty on which Labour promised a referendum in its 2005 election manifesto. That treaty was killed in referendums in France and Holland.
Mr Hague will say that politicians across Europe have confirmed that the new document is essentially the same as the old.
“With power transferred from Britain to Brussels in spades and the EU fundamentally changed, there is no question but that the constitution by another name merits a referendum,” he will say. “After the constitution was rejected the first time around, the then foreign secretary – set out a simple test for any new treaty.
“If the new treaty had the president and the foreign minister, then, Jack Straw said, it would in essence be the constitution.
“The new treaty has the president and foreign minister. It is in essence the constitution. The remaining question is where the promised referendum is.”
David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, last night repeated the Government’s refusal to hold a referendum on the new treaty. Mr Miliband, attending his first meeting of EU foreign ministers since his appointment, said: “The concept of a constitution has been abandoned. That is made clear in the new treaty. In that context we don’t think there needs to be a constitutional referendum.”
He went on: “The important question is whether it is a good treaty for Europe and for Britain or not? I think it is a good treaty for Europe and for Britain because it takes forward institutional reform in a sensible way and undermines the arguments of those saying that there is a superstate around the corner.
“It is evident that that is not the case.”

British Politicians with pens and treachery, in pursuit of their own agenda and greed, have done more damage to the liberty, freedoms, rights and democracy of the British peoples than any army in over 1,000 years.

The disastrous effects of British politicians selling Britain into the thrall of foreign rule by the EU for their own personal rewards has damaged the well-being of Britain more than the armies of Hitler and the Franco – German – Italian axis of 1939 – 1945.

Douglas Carswell MP leads the way on monetary reform
Dear Greg,

This Wednesday, Douglas Carswell MP (Conservative, Clacton) will introduce legislation into the UK parliament that takes the first step towards ending fractional reserve banking. As Steve Baker MP describes:

Douglas‘s Bill would assert property rights over demand deposits. Real savings – term deposits – would be loaned to entrepreneurs, delivering an economy built on save and invest.

This would have the effect of making fractional reserve banking impossible, requiring a shift to full-reserve banking (where the bank either lends your money, or keeps it safe, but doesn’t claim to do both at the same time!). In plain English, it would stop private banks being able to create money as debt.

Steve Baker MP explains this in further detail here:

Once Douglas Carswell has made his presentation in the House of Commons this Wednesday, I’ll send you the full text of the speech, and hopefully the video, along with some ways that we can support this move.

We’ll have further news in the next few days as well.

Ben Dyson, on behalf of the Bank of England Act team

However my comment to them is a first stepping stone – without leaving the EU our Government in Brussels will never permit Britain to enact law as the new Constitution Lisbon Treaty states.

Let us hope Call4Reform accept that or they are misleading their supporters.

Here was my comment:

Hi,

on a completely cross party basis founded on irrefutable logic – there is absolutely no reform of any consequence that will materially alterANYTHING of consequence, for as long as Britain is but a vassal region of the supra national EU experiment which has so clearly failed.

80% of all our laws are merely the rubber stamping of the diktat of the malign centralised dictator committee and the balance 20% must be compliant with its aims.

So until Britain is a sovereign nation again with a domestic Government elected by its own people – YOU can leap up and down all you like but you are utterly irrelevant even as an MP – MPs are merely paid a substantial sum to act as super annuated social workers and maintain the pretence of democracy.

Hence though we support your initiatives as individuals your initiative is utterly irrelevant unlessd you support our organisation at:

Although registered with The Electoral Commission as a Party ElCom are entirely in acceptance that we are NOT a party but an Alliance

Without our success you have no role in making law just more hot air – however noble the aim.

Greg_L-W.

#G325* – EU Membership A REFERENDUM for IN or OUT

Britons Offer Harsh Review of Country’s EU Membership
Published on Jun 01 – 2010
If a referendum on staying in the continental group were held today, 42% would vote to get out; 35% would vote to stay.
If given the chance, many people in Britain would distance their country from the European Union (EU), a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found.
In the online survey of a representative national sample of 1,984 British adults, 51 per cent of respondents say EU membership has been moderately negative (26%) or very negative (25%) for the United Kingdom.
Conversely, seven per cent of Britons say the EU has been very positive for the UK, and 31 per cent regard it as moderately positive.
If a referendum on the UK’s permanence in the EU were called, two fifths of Britons (42%) would vote in favour of pulling out, while 35 per cent would vote to stay.
If a plebiscite on the UK adopting the euro were called, a large majority of Britons (79%) would vote against abandoning the pound as the national currency. Only nine per cent of respondents would welcome the euro.
Overall, party allegiances make some difference in how people in Britain feel about the EU. Conservative voters are largely inclined to say EU membership has been detrimental for the UK (66%), but so are many Labour (41%) and Liberal Democrat (41%) voters.
Almost half of Labour (48%) and Liberal Democrat (46%) followers would vote in favour of remaining in the EU in an eventual referendum, while a majority of Tories (57%) would vote to pull out.
Adopting the euro is out of the question for most Britons of all political stripes. At least seven-in-ten Liberal Democrats, Labour and Tory supporters would vote against embracing the EU currency.

From May 21 to May 24, 2010, Angus Reid Public Opinion conducted an online survey among 1,984 randomly selected British adults who are Springboard UK panelists. The margin of error—which measures sampling variability—is +/- 2.2% for the entire sample. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and region data to ensure samples representative of the entire adult population of Great Britain. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
