We Are Complacent About Our Welfare State & NHS At Our Peril

Hi,

we all too often treat the NHS and Welfare State with indifference, failing to realise just how dire life was before its inception – a time when the simplest of setbacks in life could shatter a middle class life and plunge entire families into abject poverty and eventual starvation. Malnutrition would be an every day presence in the lives of huge swathes of the population in Britain, without the welfare state.

Innoculations, vacination and even the simplest of medical procedures would be but a didtant dream for the bulk of the population, were it not for the NHS, infant mortality is still much too high, even with the welfare state and NHS but rickets would once again become endemic and we would once again be dependent on having families of 10 – 12 or more to ensure the hope of assistance in ones old age.

When one appreciates that the 1909 Pension Act is in large part responsible for Britain’s irresolvable £Trillion debts one starts to realise just how thin the veneer of modern life really is. Ask a Syrian if they could have envisaged the life they lead today, or the life led by the unfortunate peoples of Libya – aided in the collapse of their standards of living by a vendetta by the west to prevent the burgeoning of the Gold Dinar as a challenge to the supremacy of the $US as bthe reserve currency of choice globally.

Life in cosmopolitan Lebanon in the late 1960s was a life of plenty a dream shattered by the war forced on Palestine by the occupation of their land by Zionists to create the new state styled Israel – a similar happenstance to the collapse of the Ukraine and the civil war that was resultant from the interference and inept ambitions of the EU and the perceived dangers of NATO to the Russians threatening their stability as they emerged from Communism; an interference that set back Russian liberty and the natural demise of Communism by a generation at least.

The hard won legacy of our fathers and forefathers to create a Welfare State and the jewel in its crown with the NHS is today teetering on a knife edge, facing cuts and pressures from immigration and the failure to invest enough in the training of nurses and doctors, such that it may not survive under the burden of debt left as Blair and Brown’s legacy.

One wonders just what percentage of our population realise just what a gift the welfare state has been and an even smaller percentage seem to realise just how fragile that structure is – especially when one considers the ease with which the gullible can be duped into demonstrations and protests against the unavoidable areas of austerity we face – austerity made ever more endemic to our way of life as a result of our misguided and damaging membership of the EUropean Union, which we were duped, at a time of 3 day weeks and ever popular strickes, into using both as a crutch and as a cudgel to regail control of our governance, all be it by a very allien outside force.

Now however if we are to see our welfare state survive and our NHS rejuvenated it is imperative that we consider our own well being first and foremost, liberated from the shackling effects of the EU and able to govern in our own interests.

In a relatively recent Christmas special of “Call the Midwife”, in what was very much an object lesson against our own complacency, they covered the tragic story of Mrs Jenkins.

It was toned down from the full story in the book – a story that was far too heart-breaking for broadcast as what is largely light weight entertainment as one finds on TV. The trilogy of books titled ‘Call The Midwife’ by Jennifer Worth are reminiscences of her life and training as a midwife in the 1950s only some 60 years ago – a training where she met Mrs. Jenkins, and many like her with similar horrific tales of the days before the welfare state and the NHS.

Mrs Jenkins had six children when her husband died early in the 20th. century, only some 30 years earlier.

There was no welfare state so she took her eldest, a daughter of ten, out of school to look after the younger ones, whilst she worked. The she and her eldest daughter took in sewing, to eke out their inadequate income.

Then an industrial injury to her arm, for which there was no compensation, resulted in her losing her job.

The sewing didn’t bring in enough money to support her and her family, thus she and her children were evicted from their home. Having already sold her teeth and her hair for money, she was forced to turn to the parish for help but the trustees told her she was “workshy” and denied her any help.

They had nothing and when the youngest, still not even a toddler died, she found a box and committed his body to the river Thames.

Eventually as the health of her starving children failed, she was forced to do something she dreaded.

The family turned up at the workhouse.

As they waited in the reception room she hugged them knowing, as they didn’t, that they would be separated. She never saw any of them again.

She was released from the workhouse when it closed, as with all the workhouses, in 1935, when her mind was shattered by her experiences of life.

Not one of her five remaining children lived – they all died either from pneumonia, tuberculosis, influenza or “failure to thrive”, maladies that stalked society at all levels prior to the welfare state and NHS, Mrs. Jenkins’ last to die was her eldest.

Image result for workhouse

She wasn’t allowed to see their bodies nor attend their funerals, a concept hard for us to believe in this age when society seems willing to pay £Millions to effect closure trolling the Indian Ocean for months on end seeking clues to the death of those on Malayan Airways or even more indulgently seeking the body dead or alive of Madeleine McCann!

In the fifties, the midwifes and nuns had seen, the now aged, Mrs. Jenkins around in the east end of London, but didn’t know her story. She loved babies, but the mothers didn’t like this old, dirty, shambling figure around them and shooed her away.

She walked strangely because, it was later discovered, her toenails had grown to over 12 inches long.

When the nurses came to tend her, they had to cut her boots off. They bathed her, sent her to a specialist to cut her nails (which remain today in a London museum) and gave her second hand clothing. She tried to refuse it: “that’s too good for the likes of me, you keep it”.

She couldn’t believe that she could see a doctor free of charge; the NHS was a miracle, the money from the new welfare state a literal life saver. A welfare state and state health service which was not only inovational, based on Lord Beveridge’s Report but also was for many years the envy of the world.

All this has been put at risk, firstly by subtle ammendments to the Beveridger Report made by the scurrilous early champagne Socialist Aneurin Bevan and his Communist wife Jenny Lee, wheereby the NHS was politicised but later in its life as the NHS increasingly became a a National Lifestyle Service.

A Service pandering to political need and political greed, to buy votes and even more recently as it was exposed to privatisation by the 13 unlucky years of Socialist misrule and economic illiteracy under Blair & Brown, where many Hospitals were sold off and new developements were instigated, by plunging the NHS into insoluable debt, with PFI (Private Finance Initiatives) – which more rightly stood for Profligate Financial Inovations!

We should further risk the Welfare State and NHS at our peril, as the consequences may prove catastrophic. Already it is debatable if the NHS can survive the tampering of Aneurin Bevan when he was charged with setting it in place as agent for all 3 parties at the time, nor whether it can weather the profound damage done by Blair & Brown by borrowing against the service so heavily the repayments deeply cut into its budget, or can it survive the failure through many governments to provide adequate training, such that now we find ourselves stealing medical staff from those Countries which can least afford to loose such assetts such as the Philipines, India and Africa!

Of all our National Treasures it speaks loudest of our aims and aspirations – we must strive to save our Welfare State, which can best be served by sound efforts to ensure against the industrial levels of tax avoidance & evasion by corporations and the wealthy and those exploiting overseas tax havens and loopholes

Image result for tax haven

whilst the poor claiming dependence on the Welfare State must be rigerously patrolled – The NHS on the other hand can best be served by a cut in management costs, a transfer of management to the medically trained, an emphasis on training and some method of assisting in coping with the debts incurred by Blair & Brown meanwhile making dramatic savings by concentrating the service on National Health and paring away the excesses of lifestyle treatments!

Already much of the Dental Service has drifted back into private hands where many can no longer obtain NHS cover nor afford private treatment. As with opticians and although those simple NHS specs were far from fashion accessories

all could have their glasses supplied by the service!

Regards,

Greg_L-W..

Hi,

Germany in Namibia: the First Genocide of the 20th Century

Herero

Survivors of the Herero genocide (Wikimedia)

How many think that the first big genocide of the 20th century happened during world war II, and was the holocaust? If you thought so, then think again. The Holocaust was not Germany’s first genocide. The very first genocide of the 20th century occurred inNamibia, on the African continent. It was perpetrated by Germans on the Herero and Nama people ofNamibia. It was extremely brutal and almost wiped out all Herero people. It was a campaign of racial extermination and collective punishment that the German Empire undertook in German South-West Africa (modern-day Namibia) against the Herero and Nama people. It took place between 1904 and 1907 during the Herero Wars. Today it is known as the Namibian genocide or the Herero and Namaqua genocide. For the longest time, the German government denied it until 2004 when they finally acknowledged and apologized for the atrocities they perpetrated to wipe out an entire race. However, they ruled out financial compensation for the victims’ descendants. They still refuse to officially name these actions as “genocide”.

Herero_chained

In total, between 24,000 and100,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama died. The genocide was characterized by widespread death from starvation and dehydration due to the prevention of the retreating Herero from leaving the Namib Desert by German forces. Some sources also state that the German colonial army systematically poisoned desert water wells. Moreover, the Germans also tested the very first use of concentration camps on the Herero and Nama people.

Before the genocide, the tribe numbered 80,000; after it, only 15,000 remained.

The State Should Be Subsidised By A Tax On Commercial Sex

.

Hi,

the precedent of taxation on prostitution was clearly set 15-May-1990 when the brothel madam Lindi St. Clare, better known as Ms Whiplash lost her 15 year battle with the Inland Revenue against paying back taxes – her defence had been that the State would, if she was forced to pay, be living off immoral earnings.

That the precedent was set must surely mean that so called immoral earnings are thus legitimised and as prostitution is indubitably, for some, a lifestyle choice such a choice being taxable defines the occupation of a prostitute, maid, pimp, brothel owned as clearly decriminalised and as there is no criminality involved and payment is received in already taxed income how with any morality can any involved in the transaction be they client or supply worker be considered to be acting unlawfully!

We are talking here of an estimated £5.5 Billion industry which against the wishes of those employed therein and the public in the form of clients are freely engaged. Clearly force of ANY description and/or participation by non consenting adults or those under age could then be concentrated on as a criminal matter. At a time when Police are facing cut backs yet are involved in harrassment of these consenting adults – they could consentrate their efforts on more valid crimes whilst HMRC could contribute a substantial additional sum to the Treasury tax income!

A personal choice

The internet is making the buying and selling of sex easier and safer. Governments should stop trying to ban it

STREET-WALKERS; kerb-crawlers; phone booths plastered with pictures of breasts and buttocks: the sheer seediness of prostitution is just one reason governments have long sought to outlaw it, or corral it in licensed brothels or “tolerance zones”. NIMBYs make common cause with puritans, who think that women selling sex are sinners, and do-gooders, who think they are victims. The reality is more nuanced. Some prostitutes do indeed suffer from trafficking, exploitation or violence; their abusers ought to end up in jail for their crimes. But for many, both male and female, sex work is just that: work.

This newspaper has never found it plausible that all prostitutes are victims. That fiction is becoming harder to sustain as much of the buying and selling of sex moves online. Personal websites mean prostitutes can market themselves and build their brands. Review sites bring trustworthy customer feedback to the commercial-sex trade for the first time. The shift makes it look more and more like a normal service industry.

It can also be analysed like one. We have dissected data on prices, services and personal characteristics from one big international site that hosts 190,000 profiles of female prostitutes (see pages 17-20). The results show that gentlemen really do prefer blondes, who charge 11% more than brunettes. The scrawny look beloved of fashion magazines is more marketable than flab—but less so than a healthy weight. Prostitutes themselves behave like freelancers in other labour markets. They arrange tours and take bookings online, like gigging musicians. They choose which services to offer, and whether to specialise. They temp, go part-time and fit their work around child care. There is even a graduate premium that is close to that in the wider economy.

The invisible hand-job

Moralisers will lament the shift online because it will cause the sex trade to grow strongly. Buyers and sellers will find it easier to meet and make deals. New suppliers will enter a trade that is becoming safer and less tawdry. New customers will find their way to prostitutes, since they can more easily find exactly the services they desire and confirm their quality. Pimps and madams should shudder, too. The internet will undermine their market-making power.

But everyone else should cheer. Sex arranged online and sold from an apartment or hotel room is less bothersome for third parties than are brothels or red-light districts. Above all, the web will do more to make prostitution safer than any law has ever done. Pimps are less likely to be abusive if prostitutes have an alternative route to market. Specialist sites will enable buyers and sellers to assess risks more accurately. Apps and sites are springing up that will let them confirm each other’s identities and swap verified results from sexual-health tests. Schemes such as Britain’s Ugly Mugs allow prostitutes to circulate online details of clients to avoid.

Governments should seize the moment to rethink their policies. Prohibition, whether partial or total, has been a predictable dud. It has singularly failed to stamp out the sex trade. Although prostitution is illegal everywhere in America except Nevada, old figures put its value at $14 billion annually nationwide; surely an underestimate. More recent calculations in Britain, where prostitution is legal but pimping and brothels are not, suggest that including it would boost GDP figures by at least £5.3 billion ($8.9 billion). And prohibition has ugly results. Violence against prostitutes goes unpunished because victims who live on society’s margins are unlikely to seek justice, or to get it. The problem of sex tourism plagues countries, like the Netherlands and Germany, where the legal part of the industry is both tightly circumscribed and highly visible.

The failure of prohibition is pushing governments across the rich world to try a new tack: criminalising the purchase of sex instead of its sale. Sweden was first, in 1999, followed by Norway, Iceland and France; Canada is rewriting its laws along similar lines. The European Parliament wants the “Swedish model” to be adopted right across the EU. Campaigners in America are calling for the same approach.

Sex sells, and always will

This new consensus is misguided, as a matter of both principle and practice. Banning the purchase of sex is as illiberal as banning its sale. Criminalisation of clients perpetuates the idea of all prostitutes as victims forced into the trade. Some certainly are—by violent partners, people-traffickers or drug addiction. But there are already harsh laws against assault and trafficking. Addicts need treatment, not a jail sentence for their clients.

Sweden’s avowed aim is to wipe out prostitution by eliminating demand. But the sex trade will always exist—and the new approach has done nothing to cut the harms associated with it. Street prostitution declined after the law was introduced but soon increased again. Prostitutes’ understandable desire not to see clients arrested means they strike deals faster and do less risk assessment. Canada’s planned laws would make not only the purchase of sex illegal, but its advertisement, too. That will slow down the development of review sites and identity- and health-verification apps.

The prospect of being pressed to mend their ways makes prostitutes less willing to seek care from health or social services. Men who risk arrest will not tell the police about women they fear were coerced into prostitution. When Rhode Island unintentionally decriminalised indoor prostitution between 2003 and 2009 the state saw a steep decline in reported rapes and cases of gonorrhoea.

Prostitution is moving online whether governments like it or not. If they try to get in the way of the shift they will do harm. Indeed, the unrealistic goal of ending the sex trade distracts the authorities from the genuine horrors of modern-day slavery (which many activists conflate with illegal immigration for the aim of selling sex) and child prostitution (better described as money changing hands to facilitate the rape of a child). Governments should focus on deterring and punishing such crimes—and leave consenting adults who wish to buy and sell sex to do so safely and privately online.

Prostitution should be a career choice like any other, former call girl Belle de Jour tells committee of MPs

‘Decriminalise prostitution’: Dr Brooke Magnanti told the Home Affairs Committee that doing away with penalties against sex workers would make it safer

Prostitution should be fully decriminalised in Britain and on a par with other career choices, former call girl Belle de Jour told MPs yesterday.

Dr Brooke Magnanti told the Home Affairs Committee that doing away with penalties against sex workers would make it safer.

The author, who gained fame chronicling her activities while working as a call girl, appeared in London with writer and activist Paris Lees, who also previously worked as a prostitute.

The committee began an inquiry earlier this year into UK legislation on prostitution, looking at whether those who sell sex should still be more heavily penalised than those who pay for it.

Dr Magnanti, 40, joked at Portcullis House that she would ‘wave my magic wand’ to make prostitution a legitimate career choice.

She was asked by Scottish National Party MP Stuart McDonald: ‘What would you describe as being the end goal? Is it to see prostitution as on a par with other career choices, as legitimate as other career choices, or would you not go as far as that? And if you would go as far as that how would you make that happen?’

Dr Magnanti said: ‘I think that’s a fair interpretation of what I said. First off decriminalisation, so getting rid of penalties against sex workers, the brothel-keeping penalties that penalise them for working together, even sharing a premises.’

The forensic scientist and columnist, who was born in Florida but currently lives in the UK, said she saw her time as a call girl as a way to make money while at university.

She said: ‘I saw it as a stopgap really. In the way that students would choose to work behind a bar.’

She said safety must be ‘the bottom line’, and argued sex workers are more likely to contact police if they are in danger if there is no threat of them facing prosecution themselves.

Ms Lees, who is transgender and said she had experienced ‘family rejection’ when she came out aged 18, said she did not see why trying to put a stop to sex work should even be considered.

She credited it as having helped her get to the ‘privileged’ position she now holds. She said: ‘The reason I am privileged now and not marginalised is because of sex work.’

Ms Lees also argued that criminalising prostitution makes it more dangerous. She said: ‘It is because it’s been pushed underground, it’s made seedy.’

Dr Brooke Magnanti (left) gained fame as Belle de Jour, chronicling her activities while working as a call girl, which spawned a long-running TV series starring Billie Piper (right)

She also called on Labour to push for decriminalisation.

Ms Lees said: ‘Labour, the party that’s supposed to stand up for marginalised people and workers should actually be advocating for this and allowing sex workers to come together to work in collectives where they feel empowered and safe and not that they’re going to be criminalised.’

I saw it as a stopgap really. In the way that students would choose to work behind a bar
Dr Brooke Magnanti

The party’s leader Jeremy Corbyn has previously said he is in favour of ‘decriminalising the sex industry’ and called for a more ‘civilised’ approach to the debate. But former Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman said prostitution was ‘exploitation and abuse’.

Committee member Tim Loughton said hearing the evidence of both women had caused him to think decriminalisation and ‘having everything above board’ by protecting sex workers and going after ‘the real criminals’ who exploit prostitutes ‘is an increasingly attractive way that we might want to go’.

The adventures of Belle de Jour spawned two bestselling books and a long-running TV series starring Billie Piper.
