CODEX & The inevitable demise of The EU

Hi,

A Lesson to learn on CODEX & increasing insignificance of The EU

Increasingly it is becoming obvious that the EUropean Union scam is coming unravelled with the EUro clearly over valued and only sustainable with continued subsidies and the near certainty that Greece, Spain, Portugal and probably Eire & Italy will have to drop out or face effective bankruptcy leading to reaching a Independent Voluntary Agreements that Gertmany will run and manage their economies and dictate austerity and policy through what ever dishonest front is decided on to hide the fact that they are no longer Countries but just puppet adfministrations, even more than Britain which was clearly asset6 stripped by the 13 unlucky years of management by the economically illiterate Gordon Brown & the posing of Alistair Darling.

It has been clear that the EU lacks clout on the world stage, hence Britain would be far Better Off Out of the EU negotiating trade direct with our markets and working within the framework of the more significant WTO and CODEX itself, to comply with the global economic rules directs as they come into force – the rules that the failed EU scam are forced to follow themselves!

The following three articles by Dr. Richard North put more flesh on the bones of this scenario and put the place of the EU and the foolish posturings of David Cameron, Ed Milliband, Nick Clegg and the amateur hour populist antics of the Farage cult in perspective.

David Cameron says our place is at the “top table” in order to pursue our national interest, and that includes the EU.

“The fact is”, he adds, “that it is international institutions, and in them, that many of the rules of the game are set on trade, tax and regulation”. “When a country like ours is affected profoundly by those rules, I want us to have a say on them”.

But, says Bjorn Knudtsen, Chairman of the Fish and Fisheries Product Committee, when it comes to international rules on food, to ensure public safety and fair trading, the UN body Codex Alimentarius, is the “top table”.

As we described in an earlier piece, Codex is one of “three sisters” of international standard setting organisations recognised by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) “Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement”, which together formulate global rules to protect human, animal and plant life or health.

Stopping off on Bristol to hear his wife deliver a conference on public health, Mr Knudtsen was on his way from Norway to Rome, to attend the annual Codex executive committee (pictured above, centre).

As one of the regional heads of his country’s Food Safety Agency, and the a Codex committee chairman, he agreed to talk to us about the vital role of Codex, its relationship with the EU and with Norway and the EEA, and its task in making the rules that govern international trade.

What makes this particularly relevant is the ongoing controversy about the so-called fax law and Mr Cameron’s claim that – like Norway – we would be governed “by fax” from Brussels if the UK quits the EU.

As Mr Knudtsen pointed out, though, Norway – at least in his area of speciality – is not governed in this way, even though, paradoxically, most of the law covering fish and fisheries products does come from Brussels.

The paradox is explained by the way Codex works. Mr Knudtsen’s committee is 170-strong, with 50-60 countries most interested in seafood. The committee was established in 1963 and, with the active participation of the members, formulate the rules which the WTO accepts as the basis for trade.

Increasingly, member states and trading blocs – such as the EU – are adopting Codex standards as the basis for their own regulations, and are gradually undergoing a process where existing regulations are being changed so that they match Codex standards.

Thus, we have a process where standards are generated by member states working with this international body, for adoption by Codex. Often the EU (as indeed are other trading blocs) promotes their regulations, trying to get them accepted as the Codex standard, but the dominant driver is the science. This determines the standards necessary to protect public health and ensure fair trading practice.

Says Mr Knudtsen, a draft regulation may take 6-8 years to go through the system until it is finally approved, usually by consensus. Although there is a complex voting system, votes are usually avoided as being divisive. If there is not complete agreement, the preference is to rework the draft until all parties do agree. And, at any stage, a member state can veto a provision, through an informal process or, formally, by calling for a vote.

When it comes to Norway, trade in fish and fisheries products is a vital national interest, with 95 percent of products, worth €3 billion annually, being exported. And as an exporting country, says Knudtsen – like other major exporters – strict regulatory standards are a necessary and acceptable price to pay for what he terms “certainty”.

Companies preparing a product for export will not know from the outset the destination of any particular batch. Therefore, they want to be able to produce to a generic standard which will be accepted in any and every country to which the product might be despatched. They don’t want to be producing different batches to different standards.

But when it comes to framing those rules, Norway is fully involved right from the outset. It even pays approximately £250,000 a year to host the Codex fisheries committee. That gives Norway no specific advantage, Knudtsen says, but he agrees that it gives them what might be called “situational awareness” – an early and complete insight into what is going through the system.

Once the Codex standard is agreed, a hierarchy is created. Knudtsen openly admits – without the least hesitation – that Codex, and international bodies like it, form part of world government. Global trade requires global rules, and they produce them, handing them back to member nations and trading blocks such the EU and NAFTA, as well as the Asian blocs.

With the EU though, it also deals with the EEA, of which Norway is a member. We thus have a situation where the EU takes the Codex standards and in turn uses them as the basis of its own rules for its members and the additional EEA members.

At no stage, therefore, can it be said that Norway is simply the passive receiver of rules from Brussels. His country, says Knudtsen, has been involved at every step of the process from inception to the final formulation of the rules. Brussels then adds the EEA “packaging”, before passing it on, but the substantive issues have been agreed long before the standard formally reaches the EU. In no way, and at no time, does Norway ever feel that the rules have been imposed on it.

In Part II, we will continue this report, and look especially at the relationship between the UK and Codex.

Be in no doubt that I seek to Leave-The-EU and therefore you may well feel my personal Patriotism may influence my various blogs – but when we see scoundrels, charming and affable as they may be to gain the populist vote of the ill informed , like Nigel Farage and his cult, who make grandiose speeches and childish insults to gain personal publicity one realises that neither he nor any aspect of The EU represent the values and interests or the British concepts of ethics, morality and the codex of British law and justice, which were the greatest gift Britain gave, spread and imposed around the world in the last 500 years.

Clearly we should Leave-The-EU and distance ourselves from the likes of both the EU and the spiv and scam style of its leading lights like Farage.

Many will be aware that Nigel Farage spoke out boldly promising his party would NOT practice nepotism and then he was exposed employing his wife for £30K a year when even his constituency office was unaware that he she did any ‘work’ for UKIP!

We noted he was not alone with Godfrey Bloom renting familky premises on the public purse and employing members of his staff. Graham Booth seeking to place a relation in position to take over his post as MEP when he retired and need I continue?

Then we note the outrage of Farage in denouncing EU incomes and income tax and the use of tax havens when he himself has proven overseas bank accounts which my blogs have identified years ago, in both Belgium and The Isle of Man – a trail of hypocricy recently picked up on by the media – though very late in the day and hardly ‘news‘.

See: CLICK HERE for further details and there are many other examples of dishonesty, corruption and hypocrixy in Farage’s cult and its claque if you search my blogs or that of ‘Junius’.

Not one single solitary consequential fact published on any of my political blogs has EVER been shown to be materially inaccurate or misleading – not a single challenge of a substantial fact published has EVER been challenged or shown to be wrong. A measure of just how cowardly and vile UKIP under its present leadership is and how clearly they are totally unfit for any position of authority are the lies and efforts to silence and discredit me to try to suppress the facts and the truth I publish about the leadership of UKIP and its parasites – published in an effort to clean up the party and make it fit for purpose as a party individuals of standing, ethics and morality might wish to endorse rather than a money spinner for a clique of self serving scoundrels!

Dominique VENNER – An Ultimate Act of Patriotism by a Frenchman to awaken the peoples of France to the evils of The EU!
Clearly we are not alone in our repudiation of the vile nature of the undemocratic and iresponsible experiment in social engineering and greed that is The EU!

.

~~~~~~~~~~#########~~~~~~~~~~
.
Hi,
I give you a simple guest post by Varg Vikernes, in memory of Dominique Venner whose antipathy, nay even loathing, of the institution of the undemocratic EU led to his ultimate gesture/act of courage or cowardice to draw attention to just how vile the EU is as a concept.
Clearly those of us who share Dominique Venner’s loathing of the harm being done to his country act in our different ways to eradicate this great evil which dominates every aspect of our lives largely against our will and indubitably without either democratic input or democratic output of any meaningful sense whilst both the EU, US & Britain are all too willing to use our troops as mercenaries in the odious and morally unjustifiable willingness to shoot, maim, orphan, widow and destroy the lives of others to force democracy and ethics on them – Democracy and ethics most clearly denied to the citizens of the various vassal states of the EU!
I would not advocate Dominique Venner’s solution to the problem to anyone however I can most definitely empathise with his feelings and admire his commitment – misguided as I may feel it to have been.
Dominique Venner:
A great Pagan Frenchman and European, Dominique Venner, comitted suicide in Notre Dame in Paris today, to wake up his sleeping countrymen to the dangers Europe is facing in relation to so-called “multi-culturalism” and nihilism.
His suicide letter deserves all our attention;
dolvuv
I also encourage everyone to read the posts on his blog.
Mr. Venner did what he felt was the best for Europe. I hope his self-sacrifice will inspire other Europeans to act too, although I will not encourage anyone to do it in a similar fashion. His name will be remembered and he will return to continue his fight for Europe, in another life. Hail Dominique Venner!
A big thanks to Arcturus for giving me the link to his final letter.
PS. My wife has translated te letter;
« I am healthy in body and mind, and I am filled with love for my wife and children. I love life and expect nothing beyond other than the perpetuation of my race and my mind. However, in the evening of this life, in front of huge dangers for my French and European country, I feel the duty to act as long as I have strength. I think I need to sacrifice myself to break the lethargy that overwhelms us. I offer the rest of my life with the intention of protest and foundation. I chose a highly symbolic place, Notre Dame de Paris that I respect and admire, because it was built by the genius of my ancestors in places of earlier worship, which are recalling our immemorial origins.
While so many people are slaves of their lives, my gesture embodies an ethical will. I give death to myself in order to awaken the slumbering consciences. I protest against fate. I protest against the poisons the soul and against the individual invasive desires that are destroying our identity and anchors, including family, the intimate foundation of our millenary civilization. While I defend the identity of all peoples in their respective homes, I also protest against the crime of replacing of our people.
Since the dominant voice can not get out of these toxic ambiguities, it is the Europeans who must draw conclusions. We do not have now a religious identity that tie us, but we share from Homer a own memory, repository of all the values on which we can rebuild our future rebirth out from the thought of the unlimited, source of all negative modern excesses.
I apologize in advance to all those who will suffer from my death, and first to my wife, my children and grandchildren, as well as my friends and followers. But once the shock of pain will be faded, I do not doubt that the one and the other will understand the meaning of my gesture and transcend their sorrow to pride. I hope those will work together to last. They will find in my recent writings the foreshadowing and the explanation of my gesture.
* For more information, you can contact my editor, Pierre-Guillaume Roux. He was not informed of my decision, but he known me for a long time. »
Smile! Hackers Can Silently Access Your Webcam Right Through The Browser (Again)
Greg Kumparak
haxors
You know those people who put tape over their laptop’s webcam to keep digital peeping toms at bay? They’re not crazy.
A new proof of concept is making the rounds today that demonstrates how a hacker can snap pics off your webcam, right through the browser, with no consent required.
Well, technically, you are giving consent. You just wouldn’t know it.
Outlined by security consultant Egor Homakov, the hack brings in a few old tricks to work around Flash’s requirement that a user explicitly grants a website permission before it can access their camera or microphone.
Without going into to much detail, the demo uses a bunch of fancy CSS/HTML trickery to render Flash’s permission prompt in a transparent layer, placing the now invisible “Allow” button directly above something the user is likely to click — like, say, the “Play” button on a video.
The basic technique, dubbed Clickjacking, is nothing new. I’d actually generally avoid writing about things like this, if it were new, to keep the word from spreading before the companies got a chance to fix it — but these techniques are already very well known in the hacking world. In fact, a post on Adobe’s security blog suggests that they fixed the bug (or a similar one) way back in 2011. “No user action or Flash Player product update are required,” it reads.
And yet… it still works. We tested the proof of concept on the latest build of Chrome for Mac, and it pulled from our webcam without issue or any visible prompt. Others have found the exploit to work on IE10, but it seems to be patched on the most recent releases of Safari and Firefox. When it works, the only evidence that the camera was ever accessed is a near instant and oh-so-easy-to-miss blink of the LED indicator.
[UPDATE: Google has acknowledged and fixed the bug in Chrome with version 27.0.1453.116, released six days after our initial report on 6/13]
You can test the proof of concept yourself here (Heads Up: If you consider girls in bikinis to be NSFW, that link is NSFW. Also, it’ll take a picture of you, though the author claims he’s not storing them — but clarifies that someone could, if they wanted).
If your browser doesn’t visibly render the permission box and clicking the play button snaps a picture of you, your browser fails the test. If it shows the permission box or blocks the click, you’re safe (from this specific exploit, at least).
So, why is this a big deal? Imagine you’re perusing some of the Internet’s more, erm, intimate websites. You’ve fallen down the rabbit hole, finding yourself 3 or 4 sites away from the trusted one you started at. You click “Play” on something that suits your particular fancy and.. surprise! The LED on your webcam flicks on, and two seconds later you’re looking at a freshly snapped picture of yourself on screen, hands …wherever they might be.
Fortunately, getting a solid layer of protection against such exploits moving forward is pretty straightforward. For one, you can tape up that webcam — it’s a bit tinfoil hat, sure, but it’s better than having a photo of your bad bits blasted out to the Internet on some shady-ass Tumblr. Second, consider using Firefox* with something like NoScript, disabling it only for trusted sites.
Oh, and yeah, insert the obligatory NSA/PRISM joke here.
[*NoScript-esque extensions exist for Chrome, but I’ve yet to find one that is as dependable or user-friendly]
Queen Rania of Jordan’s letter To The Girls of The World
Posted by Greg Lance - Watkins (Greg_L-W) on 18/06/2013
Queen Rania of Jordan’s letter To The Girls of The World
.
Posted by: Greg Lance-Watkins – Greg_L-W.
.
Dear Girls of the World,
Some of you will be familiar with the childhood rhyme, “What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of.”
Marketing and stereotyping combine to have us believe that you’re also made of pink dresses, pigtails, dolls, ringlets, ribbons, bows and tiaras. That you like cupcakes. That all you will want to be are wives and mothers. That you’re more “inclined” to the arts and “better suited” to caring professions like teaching and nursing.
Queen Rania of Jordan
Queen Rania of Jordan
And, maybe, that’s true for some. But my daughter Salma teaches me every day that there’s so much more to you — and for you.
Salma is 13, and I can count, on one hand (in fact, on one finger!), the occasions she’s worn a dress — and they’ve never been pink! Dolls always stayed on the shelf. She’s happiest dribbling a soccer ball past her brothers and scoring goals or building model airplanes with her father. She dreams of being an engineer. That’s my Salma; that’s why I love her.
So, when I think about girls rising, I think of girls like her and her sister, Iman. I think of the millions of courageous girls all over the Arab world and beyond who, every day, summon inner strength, surmount barriers and make a difference in their communities.
Let me tell you about 16-year-old Wafa Al-Rimi.
Some days in Yemen, there’s less than one hour of electricity, so studying is tough.
“We were tired of darkness,” Wafa said in an interview.
Rather than accept defeat, though, she built foundations under her dreams. With help from business mentors, she formed an all-female company that created solar-powered lights. They won INJAZ Al-Arab’s Best Company of the Year in November.
Wafa and her friends are part of a new generation of independent-thinking Middle Eastern girls: torch-bearers and trail-blazers.
No school bus? Pile on a motorbike
Rose Matrie dreams of a big school
‘Superstar of Sierra Leone’
Today, almost as many girls as boys attend primary and secondary school. In the majority of Arab countries where there’s data, women outnumber men at university, and more women than men study science.
I see and I hear that determination to succeed every day in Jordan.
Recently, I visited a girls’ school in the south of Jordan where 12-year-old Noor told me about her grandmother, a famous storyteller who narrated other people’s stories. Noor was proud of her “teta,” but she had her own dream.
“I want to be mayor,” she said. “I want to build a library full of books; I want to build a park so that children can play safely.”
Noor wanted to write her own story. I knew then that she, and girls like her, would write a new chapter for our region.
It won’t be easy. We have a long way to go. Increases in girls’ attendance at school and university are not yet reflected in politics, the job market or society’s mindsets. And there are still 5 million girls out of primary and secondary school across the Arab world.
But as the political, social and economic plates shift and settle around our region, there’s never been a better time for girls to rise up and share their talents with society. And, girls! Society has never needed you more.
We know that in every country around the world, healthy, educated girls can play a crucial role in stabilizing societies, resolving conflicts, bolstering democracies, strengthening economies and nurturing healthy and educated children.
But they can’t do it alone.
Role models can inspire. Campaigns can motivate. But if we want all girls everywhere to rise up, then we must find them, befriend them and support them.
That means going outside our comfort zones. Maybe they’re recovering from civil war in Sierra Leone, like Mariama — now educated and a popular radio DJ. Maybe they’re trapped in servitude in Nepal, like Suma — now an activist working to free others. Maybe they’re living in slums in India, like Ruksana — now strong and in school. (Find out more about their stories.)
And it means using our voices to speak up for those who cannot yet be heard. Lobbying for girl-friendly policies. Working with governments, non-governmental organizations, U.N. agencies and the private sector to create momentum for change.
Will it be easy? No.
Will it be as hard as studying in the dark or sleeping on a pavement? Enduring slavery or rebuilding a life after war? Going to school hungry and still achieving good grades? Certainly not.
And if we falter in our resolve, let’s remember the strength and dignity of Wafa, Noor, Mariama, Suma, Ruksana and girls everywhere who, every day, fight for their right to education and opportunity.
If one girl with courage is a revolution, imagine what feats we can achieve together.
— Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah
Chepstow Wind Turbine Factory in Layoffs & Failure!
Chepstow Wind Turbine Factory in Layoffs & Failure
.
Posted by: Greg Lance-Watkins – Greg_L-W.
.
Hi,
predictably the dishonest wind  turbine factory founded on Government grants and false hopes is facing the truth it seems – resulting in layoffs and failure.
Sad though it is for those who were duped into these clearly unsound jobs it is good to see reality being forced upon the idiotic Wind Farm scams, as the truth becomes known, in that Wind Turbines have no meaningful use on a large scale and are grossly inefficient producers of power and an unsightly blot on any landscape.
That subsidies are required to cover the pretence of their efficacy is unsurprising and it does seem that Governments have promoted this gross abuse of tax payers money as a means to levy further taxes for revenue to hide the fact that they have failed in their duty to ensure security of power supply by planning and providing nuclear, oil, gas, coal and viable generation of electricity!
Jobs to go at Chepstow wind turbine factory
TURBINE PLANT: Wind turbine maker Mabey Bridge in Chepstow is to shed 45 jobsTURBINE PLANT: Wind turbine maker Mabey Bridge in Chepstow is to shed 45 jobs
ENGINEERING firm Mabey Bridge is to shed up to 45 jobs in the second round of redundancies this year at its wind turbine factory in Chepstow.
The company, which at the turn of the year employed 190 staff at its Newhouse Farm site, cut staff in February, but has been forced into more job losses.
“We regret having to make this difficult decision. As a family business we are actively seeking ways to redeploy, retrain and move work between our businesses to minimise any job losses during this period,” said a spokesman.
The company, part of the Mabey Group, bought the Newhouse site three and a half years ago, developing it as a manufacturing base for wind turbine towers, through a £38 million investment.
“The UK renewables market has become increasingly competitive, with product now supplied from mainland Europe and even further afield,” said the spokesman.
“Our customers have also been affected by a drop in the level of government support for onshore wind.
“Earlier this year we did take steps to improve our shift working patterns and operational flexibility at Newhouse, with every effort made to minimise impact on the workforce.
“After consulting staff, 13 jobs were unfortunately affected. Although these changes boosted output, further improvements are still required to keep us competitive.
It is anticipated that these further steps could potentially affect 25 to 45 jobs.
“The business remains committed to the renewables and energy sector and we continue to win new orders for wind turbine towers.
But like many other UK companies we must take steps to ensure we can compete effectively in the marketplace.”
The company has stressed that its other factories, another in Chepstow, and in Lydney, are not affected by this decision.
Perhaps the facts, and the scam behind the wind turbine propaganda and the false science of global warming as a fact, which it would seem there is no sound scientific evidence to support, and that it is an anthropogenic problem merely highlights the dishonesty or to give the benefit of the doubt, stupidity of the green propaganda and shoddy misrepresentations by the likes of Al Gore and Pashrami and the cohorts of hangers on exploiting the scam!
Perhaps this will go some way to helping answer the questions of Paul Hurley,  also in the paper:
Turbine plants sums awry
 IT WAS with much regret, when reading your article on June 12, I learned of more skilled engineering job losses at Mabey Bridges Wind Turbine Fabrication yard.
This, coupled with the recent demise of local firm Rowecord, will make it even more difficult for the likes of welders, platers and fabricators to find employment in the locality.
And yet, on the same date in a daily newspaper business section, a chief of RenewableUK stated that thousands of quality jobs may be at risk unless Britain builds more factories to make offshore wind turbines.
Maria McCaffery, RenewableUK’s chief, said it was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build large scale, offshore windfarm supply factories, and said that by 2030 the UK would need 39 such fabrication yards to enable the UK to attain its future Green Energy commitments.
Something here does not add up to me.
Paul Hurley, Byron Road, Newport
Wind Power shown to be a subsidy scam with OUR money
Hi,
so it would seem that the facts expose the corruption OR stupidity of The British Government!
True cost of Britain’s wind farm industry revealed
Every job in Britain’s wind farm industry is effectively subsidised to the extent of £100,000 per year, The Telegraph can disclose.
Government and industry figures shows that wind turbine owners received £1.2billion in the form of a consumer subsidy.
A new analysis of government and industry figures shows that wind turbine owners received £1.2billion in the form of a consumer subsidy, paid by a supplement on electricity bills last year. They employed 12,000 people, to produce an effective £100,000 subsidy on each job.
The disclosure is potentially embarrassing for the wind industry, which claims it is an economically dynamic sector that creates jobs. It was described by critics as proof the sector was not economically viable, with one calling it evidence of “soft jobs” that depended on the taxpayer.
The subsidy was disclosed in a new analysis of official figures, which showed that:
ÞThe level of support from subsidies in some cases is so high that jobs are effectively supported to the extent of £1.3million each;
ÞIn Scotland, which has 203 onshore wind farms — more than anywhere else in the UK — just 2,235 people are directly employed to work on them despite an annual subsidy of £344million. That works out at £154,000 per job;
Even if the maximum number of jobs that have been forecast are created, by 2020 the effective subsidy on them would be £80,000 a year.
One source, who owns several wind farms, and did not wish to be named, said: “Anybody trying to justify subsidies on the basis of jobs created is talking nonsense. Wind farms are not labour intensive.”
There has been mounting controversy about the value of both onshore and offshore wind farms, with discontent among back-bench Conservative MPs.
The industry’s trade body, Renewable UK, has campaigned to promote the method of electricity generation as a way to create jobs. It states on its website that: “We aim to create thousands of jobs across a wide range of business sectors.”
It says the industry currently employs 12,000 people and “is set to employ up to 90,000 people by 2020”.
The promise of future jobs is dependent on the building of large-scale wind farms at sea and the construction of factories in Britain to manufacture the turbines, which are currently almost all built abroad.
Industry figures show that for the 12 months to the end of February, the latest period for which figures are available, slightly more than £1.2billion was paid through the consumer subsidy — known as the Renewables Obligation.
It was introduced by Labour to encourage investment and is added to all energy bills, meaning that besides households, industry and employers also pay, adding to the cost of all goods and services.
According to the Renewable Energy Foundation, a think tank that has criticised the cost of wind farms, it currently adds about £47 to the average household’s cost of living.
They say the total subsidy is likely to rise to £6billion by 2020 if the Government meets its target of providing 15 per cent of energy needs from renewable energy.
The industry’s projection is that by 2020 it will create up to 75,000 jobs — an effective subsidy of £80,000 a year — but failing to reach that figure will raise the effective subsidy.
The foundation claims that the subsidy will actually cost jobs because businesses will relocate abroad — or close — to save on energy bills.
Households will also have less disposable income because more money will go to pay fuel bills.
Among the examples of extremely high subsidies effectively for job creation is Greater Gabbard, a scheme of 140 turbines 12 miles off the Suffolk coast.
It received £129million in consumer subsidy in the 12 months to the end of February, double the £65million it received for the electricity it produced. It employs 100 people at its headquarters in Lowestoft, receiving, in effect, £1.3million for every member of staff.
Iwan Tukalo, general manager of Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Limited, which is co-owned by SSE and RWE, said building the farm was a £1.5billion investment in British infrastructure.
He added that “as well as supporting significant local employment during the four-year construction period”, 95 per cent of its permanent employees were local people.
The London Array, Britain’s biggest wind farm, with 175 turbines, employs 90 people at its base in Ramsgate, Kent. The array, which is 12 miles offshore, became fully operational in the spring. The foundation predicts its Renewables Obligation subsidy in its first year of full operation will be £160million — effectively £1.77million per job.
In Scotland, Fergus Ewing, the devolved government’s energy minister, published figures earlier this year showing that 2,235 jobs were “connected directly to onshore wind”. There are 203 wind farms across Scotland, and the scale of Renewables Obligation support means each post is underwritten by £154,000.
Wind farms are controversial not only because of the cost, but also because of claims that the turbines, which can be more than 400ft high, are ruining the countryside. Campaigners have said the planning system remains loaded in favour of developers and that too little of the countryside is protected from their spread.
Earlier this month David Cameron signalled that local people would have more say over wind farms in their areas. Developers would have to offer much greater compensation for building them, and planners will be compelled to take into account their visual impact and the views of locals.
But energy firms will be able to offer incentives, including lower power bills for local people, in return for planning permission, which critics say amount to “bribes”.
Campaigners also warn that turbines do not generate power when the wind is too low or too high, and cannot store it, meaning conventional generation is needed as a backup.
Dr John Constable, director of Renewable Energy Foundation, said: “Subsidies can create some soft jobs in the wind power industry but will destroy real jobs and reduce wages in other sectors, in the UK’s case because the subsidies cause higher electricity prices for industrial and commercial consumers. The extravagant subsidy cost per wind power job is an indication of the scale of that problem.”
He added: “Truly productive energy industries — gas, coal, oil, for example — create jobs indirectly by providing cheap energy that allows other businesses to prosper, but the subsidy-dependent renewables sector is a long way from this goal; it’s still much too expensive.”
There is even doubt within the wind industry that job creation projections can be met. Last week, Renewable UK issued a 64-page report urging the Government to “agree a long-term vision” for offshore wind or see jobs created on the Continent.
An Energy Bill, currently before Parliament, is the subject of wrangling over prices for renewable energy for the next 20 years. The wind industry says that without price and subsidy guarantees, a “green collar” jobs boom will not materialise.
Manufacturers are warning that some planned wind turbine factories are under threat without the price guarantees.
Gamesa, a Spanish company which had promised to open a factory in Leith in Scotland, said a lack of certainty was hampering its plans, while Siemens said it needed pricing guarantees before building a turbine factory in Hull.
Robert Norris, Renewable UK’s spokesman, said: “Parents are wondering where their children will find work in the future; the answer is in the renewable energy sector.
“Our studies show that by 2021, more than 76,000 people will be working in the British wind industry in full-time, well-paid green-collar jobs.
“In the last financial year we attracted private investment of £2.5billion, proving that the wind industry is an engine for growth at a time when other sectors are struggling.”
It is increasingly clear that there is no moral or scientific justification for squandering the hard earned taxes of British citizens on the costly, inefficient, unreliable, unsightly and damaging wind farms.
The entire propaganda of CO2 damage to our climate is scientifically unsound and unproven and the very fact of temperature rise is not only unproven, but more likely cyclical than anthropogenic.
Is the idiotic promotion of windmills for power generation little more than an attempt to cover up Government ineptitude in failing to make adequate provision for the planning and building of nuclear power stations and false lack of confidence in the continuity of supply of oil.
Hi,
I just have this strange feeling that this is not the ideal picture for the Turkish tourism industry, as a Turkish Police officer deliberately aims tear gas at point blamk range at a young and defenceless Turkish woman, who clearly poses no threat to the officer or any colleague!
