For those of you too young to remember, A Very British Coup was a highly-acclaimed three part drama series shown on Channel 4 in 1988.

Adapted from a novel written by MP Chris Mullin in 1982, before he went to Westminster, it paints an alternate reality in which Thatcher and the bankers are toppled and a radical left-wing prime minister, Harry Perkins, is installed in Downing St.

His plans to dismantle the UK’s nuclear arsenal set him on a collision course with the US and his own security services.

Excellent viewing – especially the barnstorming performance from the late Ray McNally as Perkins.
